Big Creative Academy Governing Body

Governors have an important role in schools and academies, working alongside the Principal and senior leaders as vision setters and strategic decision makers. They are responsible for ensuring the best possible education for our learners and that the needs of the community are met.

The Department for Education set out three core functions of a governing body:

  1. Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  2. Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its learners, and the performance management of staff
  3. Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and ensuring money is well spent

Governors have been working behind the scenes for the Academy over the last academic year and have influenced the Academy’s direction in many areas:

  • Governors monitor the Academy’s financial strategy, budget, income and expenditure via dedicated meetings and monthly management accounts. The financial position of the academy continues to improve with year-on-year improvements in reserves.
  • Governors monitor the quality of teaching and student experience at the Academy via an annual self-assessment report and ongoing quality improvement plan. Most students are progressing to their favoured destination with a high proportion progressing to Higher Education. Achievement rates are excellent, in most cases well ahead of the relevant national averages.
  • Governors have considered and laid out the principles for setting executive pay, including that of the Principal. Details are documented in the Academy’s Pay Policy.
  • Governors considered and approved a staffing restructure to create a new directorate for Careers, Research and Partnerships.
  • Governors have provided support for the Principal and senior team in assessing measures taken to comply with health and safety arrangements in light of the coronavirus pandemic. Governors have specifically approved the Academy’s risk assessment.
  • Governors have completed a self evaluation to ensure governance is effective.
  • Link governors for safeguarding, careers, wellbeing and whistleblowing have supported the Academy and reported back to the full governing body.
  • With the recent move to a new purpose-built facility substantial increases in student numbers governors have overseen the achievement of the vision for the first phase of the Academy’s development.
